Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Reduced Symptoms of All Aspects of Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Yoga therapy is found to associate to reduced physical and mental disability and improved quality of life in patients with moderate multiple sclerosis, a recent study suggested.

Multiple sclerosis is chronic and progressive condition involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a single-group design with repeated measurements at baseline, postintervention, and 8-week follow-up, patients with multiple sclerosis showed a hugh improvement in SF-36 MCS(Short Form Health Status Survey Mental Component Summary), MFIS(Modified Fatigue Impact Scale), BLCS(Bladder Control Scale), Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ), Mental Health Inventory (MHI) and Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12) and (Time 25 feet walking)T25FW,........ in followup examination compared to baseline.

The study also indicated that a strong effect in improvement of quality of life in patient attending yoga class, through out the study period without incurring any side effects.

According to the Oregon State University, mind-body therapies such as yoga practice of yoga may be a safe and effective way of managing symptoms of MS, including fatigue, imbalance, spasticity, chronic pain, cognitive impairment, bladder and bowel dysfunction, visual and speech impairments, depression, sensory disturbance, and mobility impairment.....

Dr. Rogers KA, the lead author also suggested that yoga may be used as an alternative treatment in management of symptoms of declining physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms for individuals with MS.

Furthermore, in an open arm, pre-post study design assessed the outcome measures at base line and after 21 days of integrated Yoga intervention with preparatory yogic loosening and breathing practices, with Nadishuddi pranayama (alternate nostril breathing), moola bandha (anal lock), kapalbhati (rapid nostril breathing) and deep relaxation technique given for 2h per day, after treatment, participants group showed a strong performance as  indicated in the scores on post void residual urine (62.34%, p<0.05), parturition frequency checklist (25%, p<0.05), incontinence impact questionnaire-7 (32.77%, p<0.05) and uro-genital distress inventory-6 (26.33%, p<0.05).

The study also suggested that yoga intervention therapy may be used as an adjunct to standard care for treatment in multiple sclerosis patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction without side effects.

Collectively, yoga may have a potential effect in reduced symptoms of patient with multiple sclerosis, but conditions should be mentioned to your yoga instructor before commencing.
