Women's Health and Phytochemicals Allyl sulfides

Garlic has been used in traditional Chinese and herbal medicine over thousands of year as antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agent and in treating other conditions such as parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion, low energy, etc. In many studies, researchers found that Allyl sulfides, a phytochemical in garlic has been demonstrated effectively in treating certain diseases.

B. The effects of Phytochemicals Allyl sulfides in Women's health
1. Bone health
Allyl sulfides can be beneficial in preventing bone loss for women with osteoporosis and in the stage of perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. In a study of "Prevention of bone loss by oil extract of garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) in an ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis." by Mukherjee M, Das AS, Mitra S, Mitra C. (Department of Physiology, Presidency College, Kolkata-700073, India.) posted in US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, researchers found that Garlic oil extract supplementation, apart from its unique influence in lowering blood cholesterol, could also prevent ovariectomy-induced rise in all the above-mentioned marker changes. The results of this study emphasize that oil extract of garlic possibly has a positive role in suppressing ovariectomy-induced bone resorption.

2. Breast cancer
Allyl sulfides is one of many phytochemicials shown
to suppress the proliferation of various tumor cells, according to the study of "Antiproliferative effect of natural tetrasulfides in human breast cancer cells is mediated through the inhibition of the cell division cycle 25 phosphatases" by Viry E, Anwar A, Kirsch G, Jacob C, Diederich M, Bagrel D., posted PubMed, researchers wrote that on the inhibitory activity of tetrasulfides occurring naturally in garlic and onion towards the human Cdc25 phosphatases. Diallyl- and dipropyltetrasulfides have emerged as interesting irreversible inhibitors of the Cdc25 isoforms A and C in vitro. Furthermore, growth of both sensitive (MCF-7) and resistant (Vcr-R) human breast carcinoma cells was significantly decreased by these tetrasulfides. The observed antiproliferative effect appeared to be associated with a G2-M cell cycle arrest.

3. Cervical cancer
According to the study of "Reversal of hypermethylation and reactivation of the RARβ2 gene by natural compounds in cervical cancer cell lines" by Jha AK, Nikbakht M, Parashar G, Shrivastava A, Capalash N, Kaur J., posted in PubMed, researchers found that allyl sulphide treatment (20 μM) did not cause the reversal of hypermethylation until 72 h of treatment in the SiHa cell line. This is the first report to show the reversal of hypermethylation of the RARβ2 gene by genistein and curcumin in cervical cancer cell lines. Furthermore, these compounds acted as doublepronged agents as they caused apoptosis in the treated cervical cancer cell lines in addition to reversal of promoter hypermethylation.

4. Vaginal infection
Allyl sulfides is considered by herbalist as a herb used to treat certain infections, including candidiasis cause of vaginal infection, according to the article of "Garlic: Herbal Remedies" by Jennifer Brett, N.D., posted in Discovery fit and health, the author wrote that Garlic is used to treat many types of infections: Use capsules internally for recurrent vaginal yeast infections, use a garlic infusion topically as a soak for athlete's foot, or add garlic to an oil to treat middle ear infections.
