menstruation phase occurs (about 3-5 days), if there is no conception
taken place, the yang energy drops, causing the shedding of the uterus
lining, the liver transforms yang energy back to yin at the beginning of
the phase. The menstrual discharge is bright red and profuse and only
lasts between 3 - 5 days ( spotting does not count).
I. Definition
Blood stagnation is defined as a condition of blood has become obstructed and does not flows freely to the entire body.
II. Symptoms of blood stasis
1. Abdominal stabbing cramps and pain
2. dark complexion
3. fixed mense
4. vagina discharge is purple with clots
5. Hypochondrium and breast tenderness
6. Ecchymoses on the tongue edges
7. wiry-choppy-strong pulse.

III. Causes
1. Spleen deficiency
Spleen
is the organ which helps to absorb the food qi after entering the
stomach, spleen deficiency caused by what ever reason, may obstruct the
normal function of qi to the lung and liver, giving rise to qi and blood
deficiency.
1. Hot food
As the foods entering our stomach,
they are divided to 2 components, qi and materials. prolonged intake of
hot food causes dryness in the stomach and deplete the fluid of the
spleen, leading to abnormal function of the circulatory system in moving
qi and liver function in blood formation, resulting in deficiency of qi
and blood that causes menstrual cramp and pain as the period becomes
scanty.
2. Alcohol drinking
Excessive alcohol drinking
damages the liver function in blood formation and blood storing as well
as interfering with spleen function in qi transportation, leading qi and
blood stagnation.
3. Unhealthy diet
A typical American diet
is yang in nature, intake of high amount of unsaturated fat and tran fat
encourage the rise to the excessive yang pathogen that blocks the liver
function in blood storing and spleen function in assisting lung in qi
transportation.
4. Environment toxins
Environment toxins not
only affects the respiratory function in qi transportation, but also
causes toxins accumulated in the liver that distort the qi and blood
flow, leading to qi and blood stagnation and disturbing the normal
process of menstrual cycle.

IV. Treatments
A. With herbs
Normally
blood stagnation is caused by qi stagnation or liver blood stasis. If
the causes of blood stagnation is caused by qi stagnation, then by
smoothing the qi flow, it will eliminate the blood stagnation. On the
hand, if the blood stasis is caused by liver congestion, then the
following herbs can be helpful
1. White Peony Root (Bai shao)
White
peony root nourishes the blood and tones the uterus, it reduces the
symptoms of yin deficiency causes of abdomen cramps and pain.
2. Ass-hide glue - (e jiao)
Ass-hide glue
is a blood tonic herb that promotes the liver function in blood
formation and lung dryness caused by yin deficiency. It is said that ass-hide glue also alleviates abnormal cramps and pain and stops abnormal bleeding during menstruation.
3. Wolfberry fruit (Gou qi zi)
Although wolfberry fruit
is neutral herb, it has a function to promote yin and yang
harmonization, thereby decreasing the dryness of lung qi which causes
the blood stagnation causes of abdomen cramps and pain.
4. Polygonum multiflorum (He shou wu)
Fleence
is said to help improve the liver function by eliminating the liver
toxin accumulation and expelling the "wind" from the skin, thereby
increasing the liver function in blood formation and transportation.
5. Angelica root (Dang gui)
Angellica
root is considered as a queen herb in TCM, beside helping to tonifies
the blood and regulate the women menstruation, it also promotes blood
flow to the abdomen, thus decreasing the risk of over active uterine
muscles, causing dysmenorrhea.
