Chinese Herbs – Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Evodiae Rutaecarpae)

Wu Zhu Yu is also known as Medicinal Evodia Fruit.The acrid, bitter, hot and mild toxic herb has been used in TCM to get rid of stomach cold,  lower blood pressure, reduce excess acid of stomach, treat pain in solar plexus, swelling of legs, etc., as it disperses Cold, calms pain, drains Liver-Qi downwards,  dries Dampness, etc. by enhancing the functions of kidney, liver, spleen and stomach channels.

1. Cytotoxic activities
In the study to investigate the synergistic effect and mechanism of anticancer activity of Zuojinwan ( ZJW) comprising Coptis chinensis Franch ( HL) and Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth ( WZY) at a ratio of 6 : 1 (w/w), found that ZJW could significantly induce apoptosis of cancer cells. The inhibition ratio, ILS and TNF-alpha levels of mice treated with ZJW were 50.54 %, 64.91 % and 1.04 ng/mL, respectively, much higher than HL and WZY when singly used(1).
2. Antiallergic effect
in the study to evaluate antiallergic effect of ER, we isolated its main constituents, evodiamine and rutaecarpine, and evaluated in vivo their inhibitory effects against passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction induced by IgE-antigen complex and scratching behaviors by compound 48/80, showed that ER and its constituents, evodiamine and rutaecarpine, may be effective for IgE-induced allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis and rhinitis(2).
