Chinese Herbs– Feng Wei Cao (Herba Pteridis Multifidae)

Feng Wei Cao is also known as Pteris. The bland, slightly bitter and cold herb has been used in TCM as antibiotic, anti tumor and anti-hyperlipidemic and to treat infection, dysentery, diarrhea, vomiting blood, hepatitis, leukorrhea, tumors in intestine, lung and bladder, cancers of gynecology, etc., as it clears Heat, expels toxins, cools Blood, stops bleeding, etc., by enhancing the functions of large intestine, heart, liver, stomach and kidney channels.

Ingredients
1. Pterosin B,C,F,O,S
2. Pterosin C-3-O-β-D-glucoside
3. 2β,15α-dihydroxy-ent-kaur- 16-ene
4. 2β,16α-dihydroxy-ent-kaurane
5. Creticoside A, B
6. Apigenin-7-O-β-D-glucoside
7. Luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside
8. Tannin
9. Etc.

Health Benefits
1. Hypercholesteremic effects
In the investigation of the effect of G. paraguayense consumption on antioxidative status and serum lipid profiles in hypercholesterolemic subject, found that consumption of G. paraguayense may increase in vivo antioxidant activities and have some protective effects in decreasing oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemic subjects, according to “Effects of Graptopetalum paraguayense consumption on serum lipid profiles and antioxidative status in hypercholesteremic subjects’ byYu-Ling L, Hsin-Yi P, Hui-Min H, Ching-Hsiu L, Su-Tze C.(1) 2. Hepatoprotective effects
In the evaluation of the water extracts of Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther (WGP) for 8 consecutive weeks in Sprague-Dawley rats, suggested that Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther exerts hepatoprotection via promoting antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties against CCl(4)-induced oxidative liver damage, according to “Hepatoprotection of Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther on CCl₄-induced liver damage and inflammation” by Duh PD, Lin SL, Wu SC.(2)
3. Neuroprotective effects
In the evaluation of the neuroprotective potential of Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther leaf extracts on inflammation-mediated ischemic brain injury, found that the neuroactive effects of GEE were markedly associated with anti-oxidative potential, activation of serine/threonine and tyrosine phosphatases, and down-regulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, p38, Akt, Src, Janus kinase-1, Tyk2, signal transducer and activator of transcription-1, and NF-kappaB and might be attributed to the presence of polyphenolic compounds such as gallic acid, genistin, daidzin, and quercetin, according to “Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther leaf extracts protect against brain injury in ischemic rats” by Kao TK, Ou YC, Raung SL, Chen WY, Yen YJ, Lai CY, Chou ST, Chen CJ.(3)
4. Antioxidant and antiproliferative activity
In the investigation of the antioxidant abilities of water (SGWE), 50% ethanolic (SGE50) and 95% ethanolic (SGE95) extracts from the stem of Graptopetalum paraguayense, and the extract with the highest antioxidant activity for its inhibitory effect on proliferation of human hepatoma (Hep G2) cell line, found that SGWE lowered cell viability, and induced G1 phase arrest and apoptosis in Hep G2 cells. These results demonstrated the antioxidant and anti-hepatoma potential of stem of Graptopetalum paraguayense, according to “In vitro antioxidant and antiproliferative activity of the stem extracts from Graptopetalum paraguayense” by Chen SJ, Chung JG, Chung YC, Chou ST.(4)
Etc.

Side Effects
